Black tie is formal dress for events after 6pm.
Black tie dress includes the following, black dinner jacket with silk or satin lapels, single brested suit generally with a single button although more recently 2 or 3 button jackets are viewed as acceptable.
A waistcoat or vest should be worn. (Cummerbunds are no longer in fashion.)
Either formal pleated or flat front black trousers should be worn.
Accepted “black tie” neckwear is a black bow tie.
A white dress shirt either pleated or plain preferably double (French) cuff worn with cufflinks.
Accessories may include white satin or silk or cotton pocket handkerchief.
Black silk socks and black patent leather shoes complete the outfit.
